Howdy all, I am looking for a bike primarly for hunting in the Texas marsh. Just looking at web page spec. the Grizzly looks like the best for my needs. Its got more power and is bigger than I want but I like the clearance and the option of a full time 4x4. I won't be towing anything, but carrying me, dekes, and maybe a guest.

Would I be better off with the 660 or looking at a Kodiak with a lift and better tires?

Also these models are shaft driven correct? (I'm pretty sure I read that on the web page but just want to follow up).

Thanks

Brad

Both the Grizzly and Kodiak are shaft driven as are almost all modern 4x4's. Both are great machines and feature the "Ultramatic"
belt driven transmission. The most notable difference is that the Grizzly has more power, front differential locking feature and independant rear suspension.

Price is also a variable that may be a deciding factor depending on what you need.

Hello Airwolf,

by "front differential locking feature," the front can be 4WD all the time, not just a limited slip right?

There is about 55 pounds difference between the two. That doesn't seem like a whole lot going from 400 to 660cc. Thanks for the post. One more question, how are these rated, milage or hours?

Thanks again.

I own both an '02 Grizz 660 & an '02 Kodiak. They both great machines, but I would recommend the Grizz simply for the IRS & Locking front diff. I know that there is going to be an after market locker for the Kodiak, but there's no after market IRS for it. Both are shaft driven as well.

Drundel~

Thank you.

Well..the armor kit did come in last Thursday, but there was a mistake made shipping. Yamaha's aluminum comes in two colors..the bright brushed aluminum (which I ordered) or the dark grey anadized aluminum. When I picked the kits up, I had to open the boxes there because I'm worse than a kid on Christmas day. They shipped me bright brushed aluminum in the front bash/skid plate and rear a/arm protectors, and dark anodized aluminum on the rear bash plate and front a/arm protectors. Needless to say, the dark grey stayed and got shipped back. The right ones should be here later this week, I'll get them on, pics taken, and uploaded to the web site this coming weekend.

The clean up? LOL!!! DAYS! I pressure washed the Grizz so many times I lost count. And even now, I'll get into something new because I'm tinkering on it, and will find more evidence of that mud hole. But...this spring, I'm heading back up there and will give it another shot with the new tri claws on.

Had a bad thing happen (could have been worse, but wasn't) this Saturday while riding. Last time I took the Grizz out, my father in law saw the new Claws on the ITP rims and had to see what they would look like on/next to his Arctic Cat. Did that, and he put them back, but forgot to torc the lugs down. I, stupidly so, never re-checked for myself. Driving down the rode on Saturday, heading for the trailer and my Grizz all of a sudden gives me one helluva vibration...I'm not going too fast, but I let off the throttle and notice my left rear wheel scooting past me, gaining speed going down hill. I got to a stop, and as I said we're in snow, so nothing really got hurt, other than the billett aluminum rim is toast, lost 4 lugs and the centercap. We forgot the camera, which is too bad...the Grizz looked pretty sad sitting there with no left wheel. Anyway, to make a long story short, got the toolkit out, pulled a lug off the other three rims, and put it back on and got to the trailer. Tomorrow I'll be ordering a new rim/lugs/centercap.

Howdy! It's nice to find another aggie here on the forum! Hows it goin?

As for your question, the grizz does all I need it to do. However if you are serious about muddin, youll need to invest in some good aftermarket tires whether you get the grizz or the kodiak. But some guys that ride with us have kodiaks and they go through MOST of the stuff theat we go through.

As for your other question, the grizz has an odometer, dual tripmeters, an hourmeter, and a clock.

Howdy 4x4mudslinger,

You still in Bryan? I might have to give you a ring the next time I am in town. One of the guys I was hunting with this Saturday has a big bear with vampire tires, he pulled out a polars that had a broken sprocket so was in 4x2. I am kinda hoping that the '03 Kodiak will have IRS and the front lock but don't know yet.

Where do you go out up there?

The marsh down here looks kinda like Silverbear's stuckcat.jpg pict.

Drundel~

Let me elaborate about myself, I am a sophmore, in high school. But with the help of my older friends i can still manage to get in places. Most places we go is the Chicken, Harry's, and Cactus Canyon. Most of my friends are older than I am. And although I am not an aggie yet, I am definitly A&M bound.

As for the 03' Kodiak, I wouldn't expect IRS, but maybe a front locker. But that may diminish the sells of the grizz though. We'll just have to wait and see.

The next time you are in town, hollar at me.

Nice webpage
