I'm considering a new Griz and have a few questions. Did the new model come out in 02 or 01? Have they done any improvements or upgrades since the first models? I've read of some water probs as in sputtering and hard starting issues, any insight appreciated. I can get one for $6800.00, (red, green or tan) and not sure if that is a decent price. Thanks...

the new model came out in 02. The sputtering in water can be a problem but is easily fixed with dielectric grease on the sparkplug. Do you meen the hard starting in cold weather or what? $6800 is pretty close to the msp set by yamaha, and there are other good deals out there. my advice to you is shop around. all in all i believe this is the best big bore, for my kind of ridding of course.

Jham~

The '02 is a new model for 2002. It's a completely different bear from the 2001. As for the water problem. I have never had that issue with my Silver Grizz. I've had it in water up to the headlights, and mud for that matter. The only thing I would do, because it makes sense, is put dielectric grease on your spark plug. The sputter everyone talks about so much is, in my opinion, most likely cases of people running up against one of the built in limiters on the Grizzly. The '02 has 5 build in limiters. 1 of them being a 3 mph limiter when locking the front diff and the 22 mph limiter while the front diff is locked. I think folks heading into water or mud attempt to lock the front end while still moving....faster than 3mph, that hits the limiter (just like the reverse limiter) and cuts the engine. Folks associate going into the water and having a "sputtering". Anyways, just an opinion from an '02 Grizzly owner who lets his bear swim all the time and has yet to experience any water related issues. Lastly the price you were quoted looks to be about a 100.00 under MSRP. YOu can find better deals, but keep in mind, I would gladly pay MSRP if it was from a dealer that will take care of you after the sale.

Thanks for the responses, I figured the Griz was watertight as is all Yamahas. Mine has been tighter than a duck's a$$, watertight. I did put dielectric grease on the plug due to that 45 degree tilted engine as is the griz's. I am seriously considering one at this point. My main concern was the size of it in that if it was manuverable in the woods and on hills. I use the Kodiak to drag deer and it's size is great for that in tight woods. I guess the weight is not that much different at 50 lbs more than my Kodiak.

Silver Grizz is always one step ahead of me. I agree with him 100%. If you stop when locking the front end, your fine. If you lock the front-end while moving, it responds as if you just flooded. If you dont care about IRS, then save some money and get the Zodiak. I personally would spend the extra money and get the Grizz. You wont regret it.

I've read on here that someone said the front end tends to come up on steep hill due to the power. This sounds like the rider to me but it would be a concern with the very steep mountains here. The Kodiak is very stable up and down hills as most Yamys. What is your experience on hills on the Griz??
