Is there any penalty for overfilling the oil tank. I filled it to about 1/2 inch over the FULL mark and was wondering if this can cause any problems ?

Thanks, Eric

From what I have been told the answer is yes. Do you have a shop manual? If so look up changing oil. This might help you out.

I do not have a shop manual (that's next on the list). I noticed that the tank overflow/vent tube goes back into the engine. I was under the impression that the oil tank operates like a radiator overflow canister ? I'm guessing I'm wrong - any ideas ?

On the right hand side of the machine on the jug there are 2 bolts 1 allen head and 1 phillps. The lower one (phillips head) is used to check engine oil pressure. It might be messy to do this way. the other option drain the tank. Put a quart in and keep adding till its right. No the oil tank is not a over flow its under pressure.

Whats up man? I think you should just give your machine an oil change again or drain a little out. I did the same thing a while back and someone told me that it can make the valve seals disfunctional. I know its not good though.

the overflow drains back into the top end, I have seen it blow off, you will know when it does since it will pour oil over your engine and pipes. if you are worried just drain a bit out of the tank.

FISHER1648,

Heres what I do and the oil level is up on the stick.
After oil dump
able to put in oil tank = one and three quarters quarts of oil
start motor let oil circulate and shut off engine
add to fill reservoir again and start motor again and then shut off and check
the amount that I put in is 2 qts. and 12 ozs

In my Raptor I put in 2 quarts and it is between the full and empty mark. Does this seem about right, 2 quarts to fill up the raptors oil

The yamaha shop manual calls for 2.06 us quarts with an oil filter change.. 2.01 quarts without an oil filter change.

Note: the dipstick should be measured with it **NOT** screwed in (per the yamaha shop manual)

It's also specific that you should add 1.8 quarts of oil, start the quad, 3 revs on the motor, stop the motor, then add the remaining .26 quarts of oil.

You should also make sure of 2 more things (according to the yamaha shop manual)..
The engine and oil need to be at operating tempature..
Wait a few minutes after stopping the motor to check the oil level..

Just repeating the shop manual (the one from yamaha)

Brad
