I own a 02 Kodiak, My bro owns a 2000 big bear, my friends gf owns a 2001 400(or more) polaris 4x4. This may get lengthy so bare with me.
My bro's Big Bear is a nice quad. It is very good in the mud (One of the best of the 30 i ride with on the weekend). It is great for pulling stuff around the house (trailers, boats, etc.). As a trail quad, i don't care to much for it. It is slower and does not powerslide as well. This is my only complaint about his.
We don't like riding with the polaris because of the reliability issue. I don't mean to offend any polaris owners, but hers is a POS. It has been serviced on time every time and is the biggest POS quad i've ever seen besides an (ragged)89 warrior that used to ride with us. She doesn't even ride this quad hard, but 1 out of 4 times we go we end up towing it back. When running it is a smooth ride and has power but reliability (on this one) sucks.
I love my 02 Kodiak. It is a very smooth ride. All the power i could expect out of a 400cc. Haven't had one belt slip and i frequent a creek. Awsome powerslides and easy steering. Good top end speed. The only prob i have with it is the front end. I want it locked. I plan on purchasing a locker to fix this prob., but not any time soon.
Out of these 3 i would say that the Kodiak is the best.
