Ok, the chain on my friends brand new raptor broke today while racing it. it was only the second time he rode it, and its not just as simple as breking a chain. the chain binded up so bad that when it came around it put a hole in the case about the size of a normal sized apple. the chain was tightened perfectly. he has a full coverage type deal so getting it fixed isnt a problem but i would like to know if this is common with these or whta because ive never heard of one doing it like this before until now. just give me you opinion on what might have happened. thanks.

Makes me want to invest in the steel chain guards or billet if they make them. My chain broke once, only because I was riding through the mountains and coming off a small jump, I landed my rear sprocket on top of a rock going fairly fast (before I had GYTR swing arm guard). It took a good chunk out of one part of the chain. Rode it that way for a few mon ths. (Stupid me I know) It finaly broke during a take off. Just unwound from the sprockets, no damage luckily.

My only guess would be it was tight, but you say it was tightened correctly so maybe it was just as simple as a weak link.

That's kinda scary, no problems with my chain about 2 months of solid abuse. Been through mud and sand both, and I'm not a light guy (~235 lbs). I don't launch it hard though, still not good enough to keep the nose down for that. But I did, just this weekend, hit some little bobbles at the top of 4th, bouncing them hard enough that I was freewheeling after every bump (had to be hard on the chain since it was hit freewheel hit freewheel, under throttle the whole time). No problems yet, keeping my fingers crossed.

I've done about 30 9000 RPM launches on sand with 10 paddle Haulers & I weigh 275lbs. My chain is properly adjusted & lubed & I have had no problems.
Glad your friend has coverage to get it fixed I hate to think what it would cost if he didn't.

i don't know if this is true or not, but on this forum i noticed a post that said the raptor chains were for 400cc engines.????????? i have not had any problems. not sure if they meant it was also used on 400cc engines or rated for no higher than that application. can anyone clarify?

yep, my friends 02 raptor's chain broke also and it didn't go through the case, but took the mounts off the case for the sprocket guard. and it also was only a few weeks old. the dealer fixed for free , but took them 3 weeks to get parts. does anyone recommend a strong chain for the raptor ?
good luck.

I have broken 3 chains on my Raptor. The stock one, the strongest from DID, and the strongest one from EK. I have a Sidewinder TI series now and its been great. It was a little spendy at $129 shipped but not having to worry about the chain braking made it worth it.

i bought a CUSTOM-INNOVATION.COM case saver cost me 45 shipped to my door. it made on a cnc out of nylon it is just as strong as metal if not more! plus it covers the sproket.

45 buck is a peice of mind and some protection to my case and looks good!!

Does the case saver you got protect the chain from going between the sprocket and swing arm pivot? Most case savers dont wich makes them worthless. All it takes is for the chain to start to wrap and it will break any ordinary case saver or rip the top mount tab off for the chain guard.
