brake pad clearance problem
#1
For my Banshee I have an 87 and an 89 rear brake caliper. I have the same problem using both of them. When changing to new brake pads I do not have enough clearance for the outside pad to fit between the caliper and the disk. The caliper mount is not bent. Same problem using different brand of pads or disks. Is there any difference between the newer calipers and the old models? I do not see anything different. I have tried to figure this one out for years.

The rear brake pads will fit on all year model Banshee's.
Are you sure you are getting the right brake pads? Alot of the Honda rear brake pads are the same EXCEPT for the thickness. The Honda's on these models have thinner discs than the Yamaha's but have the same rear caliper as the Yamaha. You might want to check into this.
Some brake pad manufacturers take shortcuts and make just one pad to fit both the Honda and Yamaha's. They just make the thickness "between" the Honda and Yamaha to sell just one pad instead of two, but usually don't fit too well on the Yamaha's. Check into it. The Yamaha pads are much thinner than the Honda version.

I think the last pads that fit right were OEM Yamaha pads. I thought some of the other pads looked thicker but they were the right part number. I figured other people would have the same problem as I did if that was the case. I replaced my rear disk because it was wearing thin and slightly warped. I got an EBC disk which I believe is the same thickness as stock and also a Braking disk which turned out to be much thicker. Since these are popular brands and Banshee products they should have fit. A friend of mine with an 87 Banshee also had to use washers on the caliper mount to move the caliper out so the outside pad would fit. He had bought after market pads and a new OEM disk. There is plenty of clearance for the inside pad. Since I first developed this problem I have replaced my frame with a 99 model, new swing arm, new bearing carrier and axle with no change in the amount of clearance. My guess is that I need to try the OEM pads again, and compare the thickness of the new disk to the OEM disk. Thanks for the help guys.

Try cleaning the entire caliper, lots of people dont realize how dirty it gets and sometimes it doesnt allow for the pads to slide apart as far as they should.. Might also be something inside the caliper [chunk of dirt or rust] stopping the caliper from sliding in all the way.
