Any problems with older Big Bears?
#1
In my search to find myself a decent, used 4x4 machine, I have come across several 1989-1993 Yamaha Big Bears for what seems like a decent price. Usually around 3,500 CDN. I am just wondering if these machines have any specific problems or quirks.

I had an 88 for years and my buddy had an 87.I believe the 87-95's were the same. When they updated it they bascially took away the low range.I can say without a doubt these were the most reliable quads I have seen, always started after sitting for long periods and NEVER let us down.As with most quads the front wheel bearings need attention occasionally and look at the swingarm boot good to make sure it is not torn and has not been for a while. The front drum brakes are useless if you get in the mud,I just kept the backs in good shape.

Several of my friends have older Big Bears. They are a basic quad by todays standards, but are very tough and reliable. If you don't need a mile of suspension, and just want a quad that won't let you down, you probably won't do much better than the old Big Bear.
