Need Help With BearTracker
#1
I have a 2000 BearTracker that is emitting too much exhaust from the muffler. About one month ago I am cleaning up the bike and getting it ready because I know that I will be riding alot. I clean the airbox, clean the filter (with dishsoap), put in a new spark plug, and change the oil in the engine and the rear end. I finish doing everything and start it up. I notice that the exhaust is heavy at first (whitish color - definitely not black). My bike has never done this before. I ride it around a while to clean it out. Everything seems okay but it is still emitting smoke - sometimes lightly, heavier at other times. I shut it off and figure everything will be fine when I ride it next. The next ride it "smokes" the whole time but the bike runs great. Once again it is heavier at times and very light at other times. It seems to be heavier at lower idle or when I completely let off the throttle. When I have it full throttle it doesn't seem to smoke as much or at all. After the ride I check the oil level and it is definitely lower than when I started. I completely drain the bike again and add new oil. I also put the old spark plug back in just to see if it is the plug. The next weekend I ride it again and the same thing occurs. I checked the oil level again and it is low. Oil is not leaking anywhere. Keep in mind that this problem never occured before I changed the oil and that the bike is running great. Any idea as to what is going on and what should I do next?

You said the exhaust was whitish? White exhaust usually means there is water in the fuel. Blue exhaust is when the motor is burning oil. I think you might have a little blue smoke there is you are losing oil. And when you changed the oil did you clean the oil filter located on the side of the motor. Ihave no clue if this will work but I would get a new oil filter just to see what happens. I doubt it will get rid of your problem but it will help you find something out. When you take out the oil filter that is in there now, look at it to see if there are any metal shavings on it. If so that means something in you motor is rubbing and not getting lubricated. If you motor is smoking and using alot of oil you are going to end up having to take the motor a part and replace what ever is broken. Valves,Seals,Rings, ect. Also listen for a knocking sound when the motor is running. Good luck with the mighty Bear Tracker. Mine is a great mechine, I might trade my 85 fourtrax to a friend for his bear tracker.
