diff seal for wolverine
#2
The seals are relatively cheap compared to the bearings in the rear end. If its leaking oil out of the input shaft seal, fix it now before you end up with a lot more damage from water in the oil. Any Yamaha I,ve seen was prone to rear seal problems anyway. The input shaft seal has to be bought from the dealer cause its an oddball mertic size. Its about 4 or 5 dollars. The outer left side differential seal can be bought aftermarket if you want to save a couple of bucks. It also is prone to leaking. I reccomend that you remove the rearend and disassemble the whole thing to check all the bearings also before you make up a parts list. You may be suprised how much is wrong if the bike has been used a lot and maintained a little. You can pay now or pay later
I just rebuilt the rearend in mine about a month ago. I was lucky I caught it in time but I still had to replace 2 seals and 2 bearings. I can do the work myself so it doesnt cost me anything for labor. I'm a licensed mechanic.. I looked at a 96 Wolverine last year, that a friend of mine was going to buy , and it was a mess. The guy that owned it never checked the gear oil in 4 years and when I took out the plug the only thing that came out was rusty water!!!Needless to say , the bike needed about $1000 of parts to fix the rearend. The only part that was good was the aluminum housing. Even the axle was shot from floating around in the wornout bearings.it was a real mess. Good thing he didnt buy it. But this is worse case scenario.

On my 97' Wolverine water has gotten into the rear differential a couple times now. At first I thought it was through the vent from washing it off. I am starting to doubt that it is the source. It doesn't leak gear lube and the shaft boots are not damaged. Has any one else had this happen?

Yes I've had the same problem but the atv was under warrenty, they replaced the seal but I still have the same problem. Due to the seal being open to the elements I don't see how it could possibly keep water out for very long. Yamaha should change its design on all its atvs and go to a solid axle carrier like the Grizz has.
