Wow this guy went way to far. I always ask permission before I ride and if they change their mind later I respect that and stay off. You did the right thing by getting out of there, I'd be in jail right now if that would have happened to me becuase he would still be out ther laying by his truck. That's not the right thing to do but I know I would have went bezerk.

Your best bet would be to find out what his name is and look him up in the phone book. Give him a call and see what the deal is. Explain your situation. Don't threaten to press charges, just tell him your side ofthe story. The guy may have a legitimate answer to why he did what he did.
Tell him you ride slowly just to get tothe trails. If you are reasonable then he might be reasonable

Well MegaMax,
Its good that you or your B-in-law wasn't hurt. and I can see that you learned a valuable lesson out of this.
In every scary moment there is only 2 choices, "FIGHT or FLIGHT". 99.9% of young people would do just as you did(flight), and maybe thats best. But in ten years you will feel differently.

Patrick,
I agree with what you did. I would do the same. I have found that most landowners (not possessed by the devil at the moment) are pretty cool with you riding on their land, as long as you introduce yourself.
Cut fences, and dumping old stoves tend to **** people off, so if they know it wasn't you and you respect their property, things should be cool.
The situation you had was pretty f__ked up.
