If your last engine was a victim of overheating, you just answered your own question, absolutely get an oil cooler. Any air cooled motor will produce more power the cooler you keep it,and every 20 degrees you drop the oil temp almost doubles the life of the oil !! The FST kit it good, just requires some drilling and tapping for some fittings,if you don't like taking the side covers off for that, a Big Bear or Wolverine oil filter cover will bolt on,has fittings for oil cooler lines already on it. You can make up some hoses to go to a cooler( get one from a boneyard or some guys have used an automotive style oil cooler). Some will say the FST is better because it directs oil to the top of the engine where it helps out the cam and cam bearings, and this may be true, but just dropping the temp,no matter where the oil goes, will help.Just comes down to how much you want to spend, and if you want to drill you side covers for installation. The FST kit is about 100 bucks, you should be able to get the junkyard parts for a lot less. This is not a poke at FST,just giving you a second option to give you a choice.

How did you totally destroy it from overheating in Nova Scotia? Didn't check the oil level? Buried it in mud and tried to drive it out? Just curious. Anyway, FST claims that the oil cooler will drop the oil temp about 50 degrees F and the way it comes back into the motor (through the clutch cover) send the cooled oil directly to the rod bearings and the bottom of the piston, the hottest parts of the motor. Install takes about two hours, not counting cure time on the JB Weld to block an internal oil passage on the clutch cover. IMO, all air cooled motors need an oil cooler, and is well worth the money, especially if you have any mods on the bike.
