Raptor won't start
#11
RaptorCam,
No, not an other clue but figured it could of stopped producing spark sooner but the battery kept it running till I shut it off. This is not a problem I've heard of from any other Raptor owner but stranger things have happened. Hell, I run the dog poop out of my machine and I've yet to have a problem with second or third gear, go figure! Let us know what you find out.

For those of you who say av gas is bad, think again, or read up on it before you speak. Av gas is not 120 octane Race Warrior350, the best you can get is 100 low lead. They claim you can get 100 leaded but I haven't seen it in years. It WILL NOT hurt your engine, as a matter of fact you can get away with more advance than with automotive unleaded. As far as designed for constant rpm, you need to go fly with me, The engine sees everything from Idle to redline regularly. You are partially correct on the additives. It does have additives to prevent any water from freezing and stopping the flow of fuel to the engine, and it does have die in it, and that is what can cause problems. Over time the die will cause slides to stick in a cv carb, but a quick shot of carb cleaner will fix that. It WILL NOT cause you to burn a whole in a piston or anything else. Any one who will tell you its bad is blowing smoke out their *ss. I have been an A&P and IA mechanic since 1977, and also am a licenced pilot, I know what I am talking about. My Harley, My Raptor, and old truck (Before Cats)love it. We get a lot of people buying it for their quads and various other toys, as it is much cheaper than racing gas, and most performance engines wont know the difference until you get really wild. The quality of av gas is many times better than most other fuels, and if you get it at a busy airport, it will be cleaner than any other you can get with the possible exception of fresh racing fuel. Detonation leads always to preignition, and this is what burns holes in pistons, and not gasoline that is being burned at timed ignition. With av gas you will not get preignition even with 12+ to 1 compressions. Especially in a liquid cooled motor. I have had head temps over 425 degrees on my Harley and no detonation, on unleaded premium, it would detonate to beat h*ll. Trust me, av gas didnt cause your problem. If it were me, and I was sure I was still ggetting fuel to the engine, I would look at spark. Look for a loose wire, and if all checks out, then start reading things out with a good multi meter. With care and patience, you will find it. Ron

Thanks for the responses everyone! I am going to check for spark this evening, see if thats the problem.
Kingron, thanks for explaining about Av gas. I did quite a bit of research on the product before I used it, so I knew basically what I was getting in to. Sometimes I just don't have the patience to sit down and type as much as you did Especially for the benefit of somebody like Racewarrior350, who seems not to be able to offer anything constructive in this forum.

First of all kingron, i work in my family owned shop i do have an idea about what im talking about. ive built and rebuilt my atv motors over the last 4 years ive had a little experience on those. We also run a dirt track race car out of our shop, In the car we run Cam 2 blue or just turbo blue, it has 119+ octane rating, back when we raced our first car we mixed airplane fuel and premium because turbo blue wasnt available. If the airplane fuel was ran straight it IS POSSIBLE to cook a motor. Turbo blue cannot be ran in atvs unless there has been headwork, cam, bore,or somthing to that affect giving alot more preformance. because of the high octane rating and the atvs are not designed stock for that kind of fuel, in turn causing the piston to melt. Airplane fuel has ALSO BEEN KNOWN to melt atv pistons so dont tell me im a liar. av gas is for aircraft, designed for aircraft, not for an atv. av gas is just as good as premium in a bike unless u buy vp race gas but in the long run an atv engine does not fair well on av gas. I guess if u wanna tell everyone its ok then thats ur opinion. maybe they can call you when the top end is smoked and gone.

Desracers--Everything I have checked so far looks good; I have spark, all connections look good. Today I am going to check the carbs. I did 02 Kodiak's check with the spark plug and it looks like maybe I am not getting fuel. Maybe boots, damaged needle? I'll post as soon as I check.....

Well, I checked everything and the only problem I found was a broken plastic nut that holds the spring, plunger in place for the starter plunger assembly (on the left carb). Could it cause the bike to have a starting failure if the plunger was not operating properly?

Sometimes mine wouldn't start and i couldnt figure out why. After messing with it i found that the battery cables were tight but had corruded a little inside the connector. It wasn't noticable by looking at the outside. I took it apart and cleaned it then put a protectant spray on it and never had problems again.

ccgrady--Thanks for the reply; sorry for the confusion...My Raptor has power, spark, good plug, carb boots are in place, fuel is getting to the carbs, etc. It will turn over, just won't fire up! An example would be if you were trying to start it with the kill switch in the off position.....I wish that was the case.
