Hey,

alright, i've been searching for what seems like forever for a 4wheeler. but everytime i think i've found one, something falls through. but i think i've found a couple of options.

a local dealer has an '87 Warrior. it's not in the best of shape, but they say it runs. it's got a Weisco sticker on the fender, so i'm guessing at some point it got a weisco piston put in. it's got a nice set of Holeshot tires on some chrome rims. the only problem they told me about is that there's something wrong with the starter. the mechanic guy said there's a one way clutch in the starter and it's hanging up and making a nasty rattlings noise. said it's a $40 part to fix. any ideas? ne ways, the dealer guy said they had $1075 in it ($1000 on trade-in and $75 in diagnosing the problem), so they'd sell it to me for that.

option two is an '87 Mojave. the ad says it's got a new piston, new exhaust, and new tires. asking $1200. i haven't had a chance to call the guy so that's all i know.

of those two options, which do you think is the better quad for me? i just want something quick to ride trails with, and something reliable. (riding buddies consist of Scramblers, 300/400EX's, and a Raptor) i'm 5'10" and 130pounds. comments, suggestions, opinions?

cheers,
bigmac

Ok here's the thing, I have any 87 Mojave myself.....I just bought a 2002 warrior on Tuesday.....I like my mojave, it seems to turn a lot tighter than the Warrior and I can wip the back end of the Mojave around very easy. On the other hand the Mojave's top speed bottoms out a lot quicker I probably can do 53mph max!!! and that's because I hit that wonderful rev-limiter so quick....the warrior has a lot of power, rides nicer, has a lot more speed, but doesn't turn very well in my opinion but has a nice top speed at about 62mph or so....it also has electric start!!!! So many ups and downs with both machines. My mojave seems quicker at the starting line due to its Dual Overhead Valves, but I always hit that stupid rev-limiter!!..If it didn't have the rev-limiter and had electric start it would be such a nice machine. Remember this...Both machines you're looking at are 15 years old and are going to need work if not now, soon. My Mojave has all new: Plastic, bearings, seals, wheels, tires, brakes, exhaust, and top end (piston, rings, sleeve, valves, cam chain) and I did all this in the last year and a half........and when the back shock bit the dust last week it realy pissed me off..... they wanted $819 for the oem shock or $520 for after market..... That's why I bought a new quad on tuesday..... I'm tired of putting so much money into an old quad I have over $2500 total into the Mojave and I'll be lucky to get 1800 for it!! Just think about this. $1200 is a nice down payment on a new quad.

Hey,

yea, that's kinda what worries me. but if i want a 4wheeler, i don't have much choice. i'm 18, in college (expensive), and i do lawn care. thus meaning my income source stops growing in October. and dad doesn't want me to have another job while i'm in school. so thus, no money for payments in the winter months.

but if you'd like to donate that Mojave to a good cause, i'd be glad to give it a good home.

later,

College will put a damper on things that's for sure. Check out both machines, listen to them run (no clanking noises or knocking or loud tapping from inside the engine) and make sure you test drive them even if it's around the yard or what ever (make sure it goes into all gears with out grinding and look at the wheels while you take it for a spin..make sure the wheels don't wobble)....make sure the clutch works well(no slipping or spongy feeling), check the brakes to makes sure they work good and check the rear axle bearings and swing-arm bearings for slop, check tie rods and ball joints for slop, make sure both front and rear sprocket are good (no sharp points on the teeth). Check front and back SHOCKS....They're expensive!!! Check these things before you buy, It will save you some headaches and money!!!....... I hope this helps, I like both machines so either would be a good choice as long as they're in good shape, with your funds you would'nt want to buy a machine and have to dump money into it just so you can ride.

My 98 was 1400, it had no rear brake and a tapping noise in the engine though. The tapping noise has been around for a year now and.... uh, dosent seem to want to go away. If it were anything serious it would have blown up by now. Warriors have noisy valves, even right after you adjust them, and i dunno about the rest of em but my engine is just generaly noisy but absolutely no smoke. I advise the warrior but dont buy from a dealer, you could get one a whole lot cheaper from the thrifty nickel or ebay or something. Most people dont know the high blue book value of a warrior so they sell em cheap.
