Saturday night I went on a mud run with a bunch of other people. I must have gotten stuck at least 10 times. By the end of the night I was so disgusted I felt like shooting the damn thing.

How big can I go with the tires? I still have the stock 23" ones. How about with a lift? Would a lift make it too tippy? Should I go with differant wheels?

I'm considering ITP 589's. I hear they're good in the mud, decent on trails, and fairly light weight. Im just not sure on the size and whether or not I should lift it.

If you're stock, stay close to 23" size. You can go to a 489xt,6ply,more aggressive tread. I went with 25" Maxxis Sur Tracs, they are not much bigger than the 23's,but they are a lot wider, and you will see a power drag with the increased tire drag. Also,if you go aftermarket, consider an aluminum wheel, the decreased weight will really help, aftermarket steel rims are HEAVY. At the very least, get a filter/jet/pipe setup for extra low end grunt and overall power, and if you are mechanically inclined, the centrifical weights in the auto clutch can be lightened by drilling a 3/16" hole near the ends to raise the engagement point to give you more rpms to the wheels in the thick stuff. With my mods, the 25" Maxxis tires spin like stockers, and they grip mud and loose sand like a claw,my son complains about all the stuff flying back when he rides behind me (because he can't catch me,yet!!)

Hey Darwin, Mn.
Scooby is looking for some trick places to ride in the land of lakes.
Fill my ears with music & locations.
I am also looking for areas where I can take my whole family on a trail ride & not get hasseled by the trail pow-lice because of my yz 250 making to much noise. I am the only one who rides a bigger bike and my son is ok to ride on any trails that I know of because his machine is under 90cc.
I did get the yz registered with the state & DNR and have a special mounting bracket off the rear fender for a custom licence plate. I also have a FMF Pro turbine core II silencer that is US Forestry legal that I slap on when I ride trails. I have never been stopped or hasseled before and dont want to.
Just looking for more places to ride.

Been to Aikly, Isle, Moose lake, Private rides in wright county, & Jackson county wisconsin...
LOOKING FOR MORE PLACES TO RIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!!!!

I had a 1995 Wolverine before I bought my BigBear. It had 25 inch SuperSwampers and I had no problems with them at all. I had these put on before I ever left the dealer with it. He took the stock tires as partial trade,so I got a real good deal. They were fine.

On the 98 Wolv' that I used to own, I had the 25x10x12 (rear) and 25x8x12 (front) blackwater tires. They worked pretty well, but were on the heavy side. I did run the aluminum rims though, which I think would help you out. I didn't notice any power loss, but I was running a full exhaust, K&N filter, jet kit, and a white bros. torque stuffer in the header pipe. If I were to do it again, I probably would have went with the maxxis all tracs or sur tracs. They are a bit lighter than the blackwaters.

Spider Lake,24 miles north of Motley,is a good area to ride, although the last time I was there, they had closed off the sand pit play area on the road where you come in,a real shame,it had a whooped out track, lots of play area for the little (and big)toys, and a neat little figure 8 track with 4 foot banked sides, really ticked me off to see that.Other than that, nice trail to ride, lots of side trails to explore, but some get sloppy after a rain. The St. Croix area, north of the Twin Cities, is a beautiful place to ride, lots of trees, scenery, but some trails are open to trucks,so watch for deep surprises in "shallow" looking holes. If you like Wisconsin, my son and I go to Iron River for a week every summer, great trails, well marked, and a huge 30 acre sand hill area to play on call the Open 26,just off the main trail. In a week, the Gilbert trails will be open to the public, but that one is DNR run, noise checks, and safety equipment inspections will be mandatory,I'm told.

My 489xt titans work really well in the mud. I havent had them in any deep mud because its been so dry(no rain). They fit on stock rims which is nice but al. ones would be much better. 95wolv whats the benefits of drilling out the clutch? Did you do it to yours?

It lightens the clutch weight,so it takes about 400 more rpm to engage,so you get more umph to move bigger tires. Won't affect your top speed, and no real advantage with stock tires, but it can make the difference in the mud, with heavy or large tires that change your gear ratio.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll go ahead and order some 25" ITP 589's today. I'll keep the stock wheels for now.

I assume that given the weight concerns, it'd be best to stick with the 8" front, 10" rear widths?

Keep 8 inch in the front, not only for weight, but it will steer a lot easier than bigger ones. Besides, aftermarket run wider, most of the time. The 8" Sur Tracs on mine are as wide as the 10" stockers !! Sure makes it look a lot meaner with the bigger meats on,and the extra ground clearance will let you go over rocks better. I don't know about you,but I didn't use my stock rims because they were hammered so bad, they are thin, and that big roll on the lip just seems to be a rock magnet,it sticks out so much. You get a pretty good package deal from places like Rocky Mt. ATV on complete tire and wheel set ups, that way,no mounting charges, and you have a complete set of rims and tires as spares(or to sell,if you want some of your money back).
