First ATV ... Need Advice!
#1
I have decided to purchace a new atv and I have a few questions about the different features that are available. The two choices that I have narrowed down to are the 2003 Grizzly and the 2003 450 Kodiak. I realize that both are pretty much an identical machine with a few obvious differences, Engine size, Rear suspension and physical size. Can anyone tell me about the reliability of the IRS of the grizzly, Is it equal to the Kodiaks Swingarm and striaght axal Reliability? What about the overall reliability of each? I here that the Kodiaks are pretty tough.
My first choice was a 2003 Wolverine due to the light weight and diverse abilities. Also I here they are real tough little bike. A 350 would meet my needs but they are not available In Canada So I guess i'm hooped there!
My other questions are pertaining to the automatic tranny in todays atv's. Are the durable as compared to the older 5 speed that once were so plentiful?
This is what I look for in a atv starting with the most important :
1) Reliability ( assuming proper maintenance)
2) Power to weight ratio
3) Weight
4) Terainability
5) Comfort
I have been riding a 1985 Yamaha Moto 4 225 2wd for 4 years and it just keeps on ticking. This good experience has lead me back to Yamaha.
I do mostly Trail riding with my young son and hunting every year so I waht to be able to rely on my atv to not leave me stranded in the Bush.
Thank you for any advice

The 450 will do everything as well as the Grizzly unless you want the IRS and extra power. The 450 has enough power to do everything an ATV was designed to do.
You seem to be looking for a comfortable ride. The Grizzly is much more comfortable than the Kodiak and to answer you question about the IRS....I haven't seen any come into the shop with problems yet.
For the price difference between the two, unless you are looking for speed, it comes down to whether you think you need the IRS or not. I would suggest you going and test ride each machine to decide which feels better to you, because there is a big difference.
All of the Yamaha automatics are very reliable compared to other brands. Deep water crossings are an enemy of every belt driven automatic and even the Yamaha's are affected by this.
