I'd like to pull the head on my 1990 Warrior for a re-fresh. Before I dig in, is it possible to pull the head without removing the motor from the frame ? Also, can anyone recommend a shop to send it for a basic stock re-work. Unfortunately, my local shop is pretty pricey and not very dependable.

I can't remember off hand it the engine needs to come out or not...
I usually take them out anyway just because it makes working on them a lot easier.

You can do a basic top end rebuild your self and save lots of $$$. It is all very easy
If the cylinder needs to be bored then just send that out and maybe the head to have the valve guides replaced (that can be tricky)
But the rest you can do... check all parts to make sure they are with in specs. and other stuff like replacing the cam chain/ tensioners, basic port n' polish if you wish... lap the valves and cylinder/head gasket surfaces, install new piston and rings etc.
The money you save in labor can go towards go fast goodies!

 

The motor doesnt have to be pulled out.

 

As Warrior007 says the engine doesn't have to come out of the frame to pull the head. You will have to remove all the front plastic and tank of course. It is not easy as the frame gets in the way of pulling the head bolts straight out. Even harder to keep all gaskets, seals, feed the timing chaing up through it, get the guides in place etc.... and get them darn bolts back in when you are putting it back together
