What kind of maintenance is required on the ultramatic transmission and how often is it needed? Also how long does the average belt last for under normal riding conditions?
Thanks.

Really none is needed if it is taken care of. But sooner or later you will have to replae the belt because of wear. I have 900 miles on my Griz and have not replaced my belt yet. One thing that can help your belt is running a snorkle from you ultramatic up to your handlebars. This will help in deep water crossings and will keep the belt from slipping. I have never managed to slip my belt. And have been through near seat in water. Automatic's forever!!

I got 4500 km's on my 99 Grizzly and I just changed the belt, it was getting a little cracked here and there but it wasn't slipping. Going on a trip in upper Canada and thought I should change it to be on the safe side!!!

Actually no one makes a snorkel kit. You will have to make your own. I made mine by attaching a rubber hose to my automatic trans breather and running it up above the handlebars. It's very cheap moneywise and very durable.

Did you snorkel the transmission intake and exhaust, or just the exhaust? I have seen some with just the exhaust snorkled, what good would this do? I think the transmission intake needs to be done also.

I just snorkled the transmission breather. Which its right beside the engine breather. There are really 3 things that need to be snorkled on a ATV. The transmission breather, engine breather, and pipe. The engine breather needs to be done mainly because if it gets water inside the air box, the engine will suck it through the airfilter, and into the carbs and you will have many, many PROBLEMS! The transmission needs to be done because if water gets insde of it the belt will slip and you will be going NO WHERE! I have never gotten mine to slip even when I had the stock snorkle. The pipe needs one because when you get deep in water and the pipe goes under if you let off the gas the engine will pull all the water back into the engine. And you will be ther for a while. VERY VERY COSTLY! IF you live in places that you dont need theses snorkles don't get one because they would be considered useless. But if you live in a place where they would save your quad get one made and hit the mud and water.

Well reading this, gave me an idea to call my dealer and well he said to me that they have not replaced a belt since they came out. And they have never done anything to the trannies. So that means no maintenance till it is time to change the belt. I hope he is right, but i imagine he knows what he is talking about. I hope.

The dealer I use has a belt that was taken off a 98 grizzly with over 4000 miles on the machine. It was the original belt and showed very little wear.
