It must be one that isn't a Yamaha.

The older Polaris were very poorly designed. Had a 1985 250 trail boss that would not boss any trail. My father-in-law has a 91 350 trail boss, had to rebuild the motor twice. Just bad design. I have an 86 Honda 200 sx that has sat under a porch for years, pulled it out over the summer, freed up the brakes and wheels, hooked a battery charger to it and she fired right off. rode it with no brakes and 2 flat tires because they are dry rotted so bad. My first ATV. Now have a 2001 recon, 2004 bear tracker, 89 warrior, 07 big bear 250, 400 big bear 4x4, 03 rancher, 11, can am 500 renegade, wolverine 350 4x4. all fine machines. we have sunk them etc... and they just keep going. Can't do that with the Polaris. I know people who swear by the Polaris, but I swear at it. Can't speak for the newer Polaris, but the older ones IMHO are junk.

Comparing apple to oranges...You're comparing the old 2 strokes to 4 stroke atvs. A two stroke make great power, lightweight, runs like a beast, but you have to stay up on maintenance and occasional top ends and bottom end rebuilds. That's an area where a lot of people don't understand about 2 strokes and end up blaming the entire brand because of it.Most 4 strokes will out last any 2 stroke around as far as day in day out longevity no matter the brand or model..

Those old 2 strokes are getting hard to find now. Expecting anything "old" to be reliable is a bit of a stretch whether its a Polaris or anything else. If I could find another late 90's or early 2000's Scrambler 400 2x4 for under $1000 that runs, I'd probably buy it though. They were pretty fun quads. I wouldn't expect it to last 10 years. If I could run it a couple seasons I'd get my money's worth out of it. I'd pick a 2x4 because I'd buy it simply to have something to to go fast. And I wouldn't have to worry about whether the 4x4 was going to need work and they're much lighter too. There are a couple atv ride parks where a 2wd Scrambler 400 would be a blast.
