I had a go-cart that was in bad shape. It had a 12hp motor and all kinds of modifications to keep it in one piece with that motor. I was 13-14 and had no $$ so I did only what I had to, to keep it running. My dad hand filed the shaft on the motor so a centrifugal go cart clutch would fit and welded on 50lbs worth of steel reinforcement to the frame.
12hp caused all sorts off problems. It would only do 40 due to the lack of availability of a higher gear ratio. But it would smoke its tire and could achieve full speed by the end of my driveway. It wore out chains within a few hours, I used wire to hold the sides of the links together once they came apart. It also went through tires very fast and the bearing on the drive wheel went faster than the chain. With that motor, it would take off and go with 3 bad bearings so I only replaced the one on the drive wheel.
