Yes, I have.
It was about 3 years ago I saw an early to mid eighties ATC250r that was in such sad shape, even had duck tape and foam massed together for the seat, but the guy was riding the machine and appeared to be having fun and that is what matters.

I saw one in the mid 70's, I was in south Fl, & had some friends that were into buggies & halftracks..
seems like one of my buds got a hold of a articulating frame golf cart that was 4x4 previously used for
raking sand traps. he stripped it down, put a 12 hp briggs on it, hooked to a truck 4 speed, centrifigual clutch, then
chain drive down to the driveshafts front & rear, it had a bench seat in it, and a tower in the rear, he put a little
bigger tires on it (like off a dc-4 plane) and chains on it, it would not go fast, 15 mph or so, but it would pull real good
it would go through about 2 1/2 ft of swamp, or up to the breather on it..(it was snorkled if I remember..if it did get stuck, just lift the front end up & slide it over about 2 feet, & the rear the same, then go on..
it was a pretty slick rig.. I don't know if it falls under the home made atv, but it was more of a home made hunt buggy/
we sure had a blast with it..

Check this out. Not too bad of a job if you ask me.
Homemade ATV page
I've also seen one that looked like a mini bike but had 4 wheels. It was made as a kit, but it was more expensive than a real mini-quad.

I was in the northeast kingdom one day at lake swimming (for those of you who don't know thats where all vermont hicks are located), when this guy drives up on a home made tractor. It looked like an old truck frame and it had a shool bus seat that was propped up on sap buckets. The guy had all his kids and grandkids and they all were dreesed in wierd clothes that were too small for them and there was a woman with a front tooth missing. needless to say it was pretty funny.

I had a home made gokart that was so low it nearly touched the groud and was so light I could hold it over my head. The floor pan was made of a cut up stop sign and still said STOP on the bottom of it. The frame was some thin square tubing like a 250r. Even had nerf bars that were really to keep you from flipping in a fast corner. But an adult could fit on it easily. It was built for racing and had a bored tweaked lil 5hp on it that I never ever did get to run wide open cause it had a governor. Even at the lil 3/4 throttle I ran around on it would do 45 and spin both tires (solid rear axle) in a donut or powerslide. Had some lil fat slicks that helped out with that though. Id still be playin with that joker if my dad didnt give it away.
