Mynewtoy....Went riding with warrior007 the other weekend & his 2001 Raptor tranny finally grenaded, heard a loud bang & it came to a halt. It took forever to get it into neutral to tow it away. It had locked up once before so I would have to say it sounds like yours is about to do the same. Better off getting it done before it causes more damage. I am sweating it out when my 2001 Raptor tranny will go. I may just do mine in his garage at the same time he does his. I had just replaced the piston/cam but while it apart I wll be tempted to bore it out & replace the clutch/rod, flow the head, & etc etc... this thing is a dman money pit!!! Its a real shame Yamaha never stepped up to the plate on the 2001 tranny. Beware of any new quads they come out with!!!! My local dealer said they were willing to replace trannies for labor cost only but with what a dealer charges I would rather spend the time learning how to do it myself!

Chimmer,
The time do do the tranny swap is before it grenades. It will damge unsuspecting parts that would not be part of the swap.
If you have the knowledge and proper working area, by all means save yourself some ridiculous labor charges. I had neither the working area or enough knowledge or guidence to do this myslef and shelled out $780.00 in labor costs.

wshrdskin, sounds like good advice to me. My local yam dealer told me they just did one of those good will jobs for $800, the parts were free, they just charged for labor. With that in mind, shouldn't I be able to buy the parts for free if I am doing the labor myself? Not in a million years I bet, doesn't sound like good will to me, arrgh! Sheeit, wish I could have found a good will dealer to do it for the cost of parts. I checked a lot of places, didn't any of them seem to want to help in any way, shape or form. They just wanted my money. I hear of storys of people getting their trannys replaced for $750-$1000 parts and labor. All my estimates were in the $1200-$2000.00 range. The $1200.00 was if nothing else was broken inside and as it turned out more was damged than just a basic tranny swap.
