I found a SWEET deal on a 2001 Raptor. How bad are the trannys and what happens if they go out.

If its a great, great, great deal then I would buy a 01. Then update the tranny. No joke. They are the biggest piece of #%^ tranny's. I can't ride my 01 due to the tranny is going out. You will know when you hit "fake" neutral and it don't feel right when riding. If your tranny blows you have the chance of getting hurt or destroying more of your engine. Thats just my opinion. It just sucks to have a $6000 machine sit there and wait for parts.

The guy wants $4000 and it has 5 hours time. Looks like showroom cond NOT a scratch, still has the **** on the tires, I will probably be able to find an '02 next year for around $4500. I'll end up spending the same fixing the tranny on the '01 as buying an '02, but It's hard to find one in this good of cosmetic shape.

If its in that good of condition then sounds good. You can get some good riding in and then change the tranny. Or wait and get a 02. I love the 02 way more than my piece of @#%..................

I'll wait for a used '02 I'm not the type that buys brand new things I'm a cheap and I only buy things that I get a deal on. I would not be comfotorable riding an '01 not just the fear of breaking my tranny but other internal things. Sounds like a Nightmare

I hate the 02 ratios. I will keep dumping 01 gears back in it every time it breaks. It hasn't broken yet...but I already put in new 01 gears for the hell of it.

I wish I would have waited on the 02 model. I bought an 01 and there is a pretty long list of improvements made since 01. At least Yamaha has actually made the improvements, but us 01 guys are sorta out in the cold.......It's the classic first model year thing......My tranny is still OK, but I wonder about it when I'm 50 miles away out in the desert !

Honestly, I dont think $4k is that great of a deal considering the bad press the 01s are getting.

Hey seems like if you avoid the down shift from 2nd to 1st you can avoid the major failure. If it ever locks up, tear it down and replace the gears.

Mine is as stock as the day I bought it. No problems. I stopped using reverse as a preventative measure many moons ago after learning how second gear lines in with reverse from garyc660r.
