01 Raptor steering stem removal
#1
Alright guys, just stripped everything off the machine, went a little overboard. Can't seem to figure out how to get the lower bearing assembly of the steering stem out of the frame mount. I have the lower lock nut and tie rod end assembly off. Do you just pound the stem up. Don't want to crush that bearing. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

take off the top bushing and just pull the stem out. should come right out w/ the nut removed. not a press fitting. if you do any pounding, get a nylon hammer. so you don't damage the threads. imo the stock stem is junk anyways. wears out to fast if you ride/race hard. i picked up a bulger crome moly stem for 175.00 on e bay. +1/2 taller, anti vibe, silver vien powder coat.

Raptorguy,
Likewise, remove the upper bushing assembly and the stem should pull out easily. I dont know much about the bulgar stems, but i do know that $175 seems way to cheap for a good racing steering stem. I recommend the Roll Design, or even better and stronger the RPM unit. Give Jeremy a call at RPM after the 1st of the year and he can set you up. RPM steering stems are the only ones manufactured that have a double wall tube design, all others including the Roll Design stem are single wall tubing. Send an email to discuss this issue. I have alot of research on steering stems.

alright, my stem was rusted up bad. Took a giant jaws puller and a big breaker bar to pop it out. Don't have my service manual with me right now, its at the shop with my tranny. How does that bearing come out of the frame? It appears that it is threaded in, has that internal hex nut pattern, like a giant allen wrench. Does it just thread out or is it pressed in?
Herbdon, i think I've got your bug. We went a little overboard the other night and now I just have a frame. Check your pm, got a couple questions. Have a good christmas guys.

There is a special tool for removing that nut I believe. I just made one out of some big lug nuts and a wheel stud. It's not in there super tight...but you will definitely need a tool like I described to break it loose.
