I have heard that if you shouldn't go higher that 11:1 with the stock rod, but I know quite a few 686's with 12:1, and even 13:1 compression. Is it ok?

The stock rod should be fine up to 11:1 or 12:1 compression, I use a JE 11:1 piston on my stock bore 660 and have no problems. Its a toss up between the stock rod and a aftermarket. Price wise keep the stock rod, if you plan to run 13:1 compression and shift at 11000rpm then get a aftermarket rod.

OK, theres one that failed, maybe it would be a good idea to get a aftermarket rod for piece of mind

Too much $$$ for me, staying with stock. I might regret it, but oh well, you only live once
