I own a 2000 Warrior and have had nothing but problems with it since I bought it. Currently it won't start. When you press the start button, it sounds like a machine gun going off and the starter won't engage. I have checked all the relays, they're fine. I tore the starter out, cleaned and inspected it, it's fine. I even checked the ingnition coil, it was fine also. And of course, the obvious, the battery is fine. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure this one out. Any help would be great.

Also, I want to add a backup pull start for just these occasions, what can I use. I heard the Wolverines have these starters, are they compatible?

Where is the sound directly coming from? Does the machine freewheel and seemingly slam in turning the engine over? It could be your 1-way starter bearing (common Yamaha problem), or maybe gears that the starter operates...these gears operate the 1-way starter and are in-between the starter and 1-way. You can take the side cover off too inspect the gears (and too make sure the starter is operating). You will need a puller if the 1-way is bad.

 

Have you put the battery on the charger to check to see if it fully charged. My 93 use to make a machinegun like sound when my battery would be low. Try hooking booster cable to the battery and see if it will turn over when getting extra juice. If it turns the atv over then its a charging problem.

you can just get an old pull starter from the older warriors, they go right on.

 

I have seen older pullstarts that came off 1987 warriors on ebay sometimes.

Usually what you are describing is a low battery. The solenoid is like a big **** relay, you push the starter button and the solenoid closes the circuit to the starter and 12v is applied to the starter. If the draw is too great the solenoid doesnt have enough juice to operate the internal relay and it releases - once it releases it has enough juice since there is no "draw" to once again operate the relay, this scenario happens over and over very fast you get a loud chatter or "machinegun sound" from the solenoid.

Even if the battery measures 12v it doesnt mean it can hold the 12v under a current load like starting. So get a jump from a car using booster cables like kodiac400 says.
