They probably could keep making 2 strokes that comply with the new regulations.... but you wouldn't buy them. They would be gawd awful expensive and not have the power of before. Who would pay premo duckies for a neutered banshee....

 

That would really suck if they banned 2 strokes. That's all I have is 2 strokes.

 

I read about that in the latest issue of ATV Action. All they said is that the 2-stroke Polaris and Yamaha atv's will have to be "updated" or they will not meet emissions standards. Personally I wouldn't want to have a 2-stroke for myself, but I don't think they damage the environment any more than any other atv. I hope that they do whatever they have to do to "update" 2-strokers so people who do enjoy them can keep riding them.

 

See it really wouldn't bother me because I really like the older 2 stroke quads.l

 

there isnt anything that i can think of in michigan that has anything to do with smoke. all that everyone cares about is spark arrestors and the noise. thats about it.

 

The Government Regulations that cover Emission Standards on All Production Motorized Vehicals (Including modifications to production vehicals), falls under the Gigantic umbrella of the EPA's Clean Air Act. These are the regulations that are trying (Mostly in CA) to force everyone into Electric, Electric Hybrids, and Fuel Cell automobiles. The way it works is they (The Government) threaten to withhold Federal funds from Cities, Counties & States that exceed Federal clean air guidlines on more than X number of days a year. This by the way is the same Government office that allows the big Oil Companies to pollute and gives them Credits towards their violation fines for crushing older cars (But that's another issue for a different Forum).

Emissions, are higher on 2 Strokes than they are on 4 Strokes (Assuming both are tuned and running properly.) and that is why they are going after them first. You can BET your A** that it won't be long before they come after ALL recreational vehicals. You and I both know that the amount of toxic emissions that are caused by us riding our ATV's is insignificant in the larger scheeme of things. But the Enviromental Lobbiest are a powerfull organization, and they are using the Clean Air Act to get their way.

Either way, as the popularity and the sales of ATV's increases, if the manufactures don't start working on the problems of emissions, they are going to find themselves behind the 8 Ball and the Tree Huggers are gonna win. Can you imagine ATV's with Catalitic Converters on them?

Sorry for the Soap Box Sermon. I'm really not a anti Government Wacko, the only reason I know any of this crap is through my dealings concerning regulations in the high performance automotive industry.
