Default Raptor - a little black smoke/soot, must be rich ?

Here's what I have:

01 Raptor, Yosh comp full system, pro-flow foam, snorkel on and flap cut out, airbox lid on with no holes, dynojet kit, DJ144/146 jets (followed instructions)....riding at sea level (Glamis).

I'm noticing some black soot on my 6-pack rack. I burned about 10 gallons through it (duning, high rpms) and there is enough soot so you cant see the color of the alum through it. Not horrible but it's more than expected. Can someone with the same set-up confirm that I might be a bit rich. The dynojet instructions say that the jets I have installed should be right for 0-to-3000 ft. I figured if anything I'd be a little lean at 0 ft ???

I have not checked the plug yet but my guess is I'll need to go to a DJ 142/144 combo. Is anybody else finding this out at sea level.

How many turns out on your idle screws and what groove do you have the clips on your needles?
I would'nt think your mains are to big but you might be rich on your idle screw and needle. Have you thought about putting holes in your lid, that might be all you need.

Mixture screw = 3 turns
Needle clip = 4th groove from top.
(per dynojet instructions)

Sound good ?

I would try needle on the 3rd goove and maybe turn the air screws in a little. Or put a couple of holes in the lid.

If memory serves me correctly. Dyno jet calls for a 146/148 mains at 0-3000' with an aftermarket exhuast. Soot happens. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

with the dynojet instructions infront of me u need 146/148
the jetting u have now is for a slipon not a full sys

OK, but wouldnt that make it even richer ? Thats sorta why I am puzzled - with DJ144/146 I'd expect to be on the lean end of things ?

So the concensus is that a little soot is OK (better than being lean). Is it worth messing with at this point ?

If it is running good, I would leave it alone. I get the black soot on mine as well, no biggie. It did go away when I burned a cleaner fuel; just FYI [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

Checked my plug and it looks real good - light choc brown (not black or white). And I confirmed that I have the DJ144/146 combo. Wshrdskin is correct - the directions say 146/148 for my set-up but I recently replaced an FMF slip-on with the yosh full and did not re-jet - sorta forgot about that.....

I think I'll leave it alone since the plug looks happy and it seems to run well at all RPM ranges!
