carburetor question on mid 1970s Yam DT125 dirtbike

First: if ATV Connection has a dirtbike cousin, kindly tell me the URL, I'd rather ask in the appropriate forum!
Second, I fully believe this is not going to need a MC expert: the DT125 had a carburetor flow problem - it flowed all over the floor!
It was ridden into the garage with everything acting normal; we shut it down, pickled it (a 'secret' mix of STP and Marvel Mystery oil into the plug hole, then cranked about 30 times). Then we stored the bike for 12 or so years. When we went to fire it up, we turned on the fuel valve and the carburetor started pouring gas onto the floor. Uh-oh.
Personally, I think the carburetor fuel bowl dried out over the many years, the float dropped to the bottom of the bowl and the remaining gas varnished the float to the bottom of the bowl, causing it to stick there; when the fuel valve poured new gas into the bowl, the float did not rise to close the needle valve, and the rest is simply pouring out onto the floor through a vent or some such.
I believe all I need to do is clean the carburetor...... Anyone have any ideas if I'm off base??

Most likley what ur thinking is right. Take the carb off and look at the floats. They are most likley stuck open and making the gas flow all over. Its happened to me a few times when I had old dirtbikes. At most, you will have to get new float bowls..

I had one of those guys. It was an AT2 with a DT2 crank in it. Man, that was a fun machine. You are probably right. The float is stuck or it may have a hole in it. If you need parts, good luck.

im rebuilding a dt185 right now after u check the float, id replace the float needle and seat. especially if it doesnt run. to know if that is bad start the bike with the gas off, if it starts to run better and clean out right b4 the gas is gone out the seat and float needle is bad.

Hole.... I would wonder how I got a hole in the float, but I guess there must be some way, or these things wouldn't need replacing. Thanks for mentioning that. As for needing parts, This thing has to be a Mikuni slider, parts are usually easy to get, once you know what model you have. And considering the machine is in good shape, I'd even spring for a whole new carb, but then I'd have to adjust it.... ugh, new carb si not a good idea after all.
Float needle and seat. Check-a-roonie. While I'm there for a float, add the remaining goodies to the order. Got it.
