CRYO TREATING
#1
Anybody have the low down on cryo treating engine parts? I have a buddy who has a cryo tank set up in his garage. I just would like to know what and how it helps, if it does at all. Who has had it done?

I did a bit of research and calling around on the whole cryo thing. Wanted to be sure it wasnt just a fad among the race guys. Turns out that there are two critical factors that make the treatment effective or not. 1) the material MUST have Austenite (a soft form of iron) in it. The general concensus is that if it's ferrous (magnet sticks) it has the right stuff. 2) The material must have been properly heat treated prior to cryo.
I had my 02 tranny gears treated because they are definately ferrous and I'm guessing Yamaha heat treated them previously. Also, depending on the base material there are different tempering and treatment profiles (controlled cooling and heating). This can be critical to optimize the effectiveness of the treatment. Cryo is an extension of the original heat treatment. Most places have a computer controlled system with different profiles.
As far as cost, the best deal I found (in the southwest) was from cryoscience.com. They charged $10 per part. Talk to Travis and thell them Eric Fisher from AZ sent ya..They do some race engine parts and ring&pinons and say it really works....
I'll never REALLY know if it was effective but I figured what the heck......

Cryo do work.
This was couple yrs ago.
One time I had the whole Banshee engine cryo before putting back together. Well one time it had go to the shop due to piston sieze. after I got the bike back, The shop run the motor to make sure the jetting in proper range. So I assumed it had oil. disgust; So next time went to the dune, I rode it hard for about 30 min till it starting acting very strange then it lock up. The fourth gear got too hot and it weld to the shaft. I was surprise it last 30 min before it stop the bike. I think w/o cryo treatment I wouldn't last then 10 min out on riding hard.
The shop did fix it for free because they mess it up by forgeting to add oil in the case.
So from now on I alway make sure it got oil even the bike had taken in for whatever.....
When I have my rappy motor built I will have it cryo before it put back together.

Damn, I guess you could build a motor to be almost bullet proof. I guess when I pull mine down to weld the crank and rework the topend I will have him cryo the whole damn thing.
Air thanks for your input, I am sure his setup is top knotch. He is doing brake rotors and a bunch of other stuff for some manufacturing firm. He also does all the performance work for the local bike shop, porting and so on....

2 things....1.Can a stock connecting rod be cryo and withstand 11.1 compression.
2.Talking with one of our customers, I found out they do Cyro for race engines. He said, and we can trust him. Is that he charges very, very resonoble sp? I will get some prices. I'm going to take my tranny back apart and have it cryo. Anyother parts that I should have done while i'm at it. TIA
