Default Side case crack!...

I received my 727 back last week and have done the cam break in.
I still have to adjust the vales, and do some jetting.

I have one problem...

The side cover on the right hand side of the bike has the oil line that feeds the oil to the cam. When I started the bike I noticed it was leaking, and though hey I must not have tightned the bolt. I grabed the nearest ratchet and 12 socket and gave her a little twist... POP... now I have a hair line crack about 1/4 inch and yes the oil will leak out. After I took the bolt back off I notced that there was a spot where the powder coating had kept the bolt from getting a good seal hence the leaking, and why I thought that I had missed tightning the bolt. Now I have a small leak around the bolt. Here is what I tried... I took the side cover off and grinded a "V" along the crack and filled it with JB Weld, well this slowed the leak but did not stop it. Any thoughts on what to do from here?

I thought about trying a few high pressure "o" rings instead of the copper seals... Yeay / nay?

Another thought was to try to get a longer bolt because there is about another 1/4 inch or more theads that go up into the side case, but I haven't been able to find a longer bolt yet.. I've tried the Yammy shop and NAPA.

I have heard that you cannot get the side casses welded is this true?

And yes I know the obvious answer is buy a side case but after droping the jack that I have in this bike my wife is about to bust my A$$.... any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know why you couldn't weld it. Its not anything special like the cam cover. I think the o-rings would be a good idea to try, I mean whats it going to hurt anyway.?. Its going to cost you just about anyway you go. If you weld it the powder coating will be gone, or buy a new case and thats more... sorry that happened, yamaha4life had it happen when he got his chromed, but it didn't crack just leaked around the bolt.

Default Side case crack!... HELP!!

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to try to find a longer Banjo bolt and try that along with the o rings. If that don't work then I'm going to pick up a side case and get it powder coated again.

Anyone have any ideas on where would be the cheapest on a case?

I am a little confused, how will a longer bolt stop the crack from leaking?

I have no clue where to get a case from though.

Default Side case crack!... HELP!!

Where the screw goes into the side case there is about an extra 1/4 inch of threads, that arent cracked. so I think if I put a longer bolt I could get a little more torque on the bolt, where as right now I can barely snug it or it will spin. So I'm thinking that along with the o rings I may be able to tighten it up enough to stop the leak.
MAYBE... and that is one big maybe.

I'm going to hit the net and see what kind of damage a new case will do to my wallet. I know the dealer told me right at 250$ but I'm thinking I should be able to find one for less on the net

I would get it welded, the grind it down a little so it isnt so obvious. If you don't want to get it welded...at least JB weld it. First take a tiny drill bit, and drill a hole at the bottom of the crack so that it can't crack anymore. Then JB weld it. I guarantee that would stop the leaking

The drilling the whole thing sounds like a good idea. never thought of that. Would allow the JB weld to have something to bond into as well.

Thanks! may have to try that.

JB weld is amazing..just make sure you mix that stuff PERFECTLY, and let it dry at least 14 hours.
