ya, i miss his stories too. in my opinion, the best atv story teller i have ever read, lol!
last i heard, he was hibernating doing the collage thing, along with alot of winter snow. he lives in the u.p. of michigan, so when he gets snow, it comes by the foot, lol!
vforcer, when i first came in here, it was 50% 4x4 quads. this IS the sight that i learned from, and i have always been appreciatve of that. so, if i can help, i always try to.

WOW, I feel like I hit a home run here! I was out riding my Grizz tonight, and for the first time, experienced the exact same symtoms as the rest of you. I logged on, did a quick search and this thread came up first. I live in Minnesota and have only rode mine since fall, so the temps have been low. Today it was much warmer and some buds and I were in the woods breaking trail, using a lot of power and going slow. The sputtering seemed like it was out of gas the first couple times, but like you guys talked about, a quick hammer on the throttle, it fell flat on it's face a couple times. I'll be fixing this, first thing tomorrow! Thanks!

MMwildman, you experienced the very same problem that I have. I'm going to do everything that the others have suggested as soon as I can find some reflective tape for the tank. Should it have some insulation on it also or just thin metallic tape? I can't say enough how much better I feel that others have been through the same ordeal and have fixed thiers and are willing to help!! Great Bunch!!!

i would go with the insloated heat shield myself. just seems like more protection to me.
i figure you all allready know this, but i will jsut through it out there anyway.
the valves. they need adjusting ALOT!!! i do mine every 25 or 30 hours. 3 or 400 miles. the 3 intake allways tighten up on mine, along with all others i have spoken with, lol. if you dont keep up on them, they will tear up the head adventually, along wiht running hot, spitting, sputtering, and all around performance loss.

Hey uh I've been Thinking of buying a new Grizz '03.... have they fixed ANY of these problems on the '03's? or should I expect the same problems? are these problems on ALL grizzs? or do just certain types of riding bring them out. I live in the midwest and most of my riding is in the summer, slow trail rides in southern Missouri.. where I could see overheating being a problem. It would TOTALY suck getting a new bike and having to deal with abunch of BS!

IMO, the valves are part of routine maintenance. The only problem with 660 Grizz's, is the gas boiling, because of excessive carb heat. There is no heat shield on the carb side of the exhaust pipe, and insulating it, and the underside of the tank, fixes it. Simple and easy. But I totally agree, yamaha should address it. Before I did this, I only noticed the problem, when I was going very slow, and working the engine very hard. If I had any ground speed at all, it wouldn't do it. When it did do it, mine started right up, never left me, or did I have to wait.

I just bought a 2000 grizz 3 months ago. The last couple trips when I have been riding for a while if I stop the machien for a few minutes, when I start going again it will sputter a few times like it is out of gas. Is this the same problem as what I have read here about the 660 and will the same things fix the problem on my 600. Thanks for the help

Also thinking about buying the 03 Griz but am concerned about these problems. I really want the on/off 4wd and the trax lock, pulling capacity, power etc but dont want to spend the 6 grand if I have to pay for or do a bunch of after market fixes. Is this a problem that the dealers have admitted with the Griz and did they fix it with th 03 models.
If this is a problem, maybe I should look at the prairie or the rincon?
