Default I need some advice

Ok, I have the case split to replace the one way bearing. In the manual, it tells me to hold the starter clutch and turn the starter wheel counterclockwise and clockwise. it should spin freely clockwise and it does, and when i turn counter it is engaged like it says it's supposed to. I'm a little confused. If the one way is bad shouldn't the starter wheel spin freely in the counterclockwise direction? By the way, all the gears look good. Before, the starter would engage and this crazy banging noise would happen accompanied with a little freespin. So I took that as the symptoms of a bad one way. Any suggestions?
