Default Need help pulling my new trailer!

Just bought an 6X14 enclosed trailer to haul two atv's or whatever else needed. Problem is my '97 Ranger is not liking it very much. I has a 4.0L V-6 and 5 speed manual with 3.73 gears. I pulls it OK until you get into the big hills and\or lots of wind.

I would like to fix this problem by buying a new truck with a V-8 but right now I don't want to spend the money, the Ranger's paid off. Any good ideas to boost power output for trailer hauling duty? I am not looking for that much so no supercharger, but it would be cool. Chips, air intakes, ect? I have a custom cat-back exhaust with no muffler. Thanks guys.

4:10 gears might help. But if it's 4WD that could get pricey.
An air intake is a good idea.
You could always visit advance adapters & buy their V-8 conversion kit & go crazy

what size tires to you have? 2 or 4 wheel drive? One option would be a change of gear ratios, say 4.10:1, etc. That would allow you to run in a better RPM range.

WoW Andrew Thomas....I think we may have posted at the same time with almost the same info!

How about buying an inexpensive older truck for towing your trailer. For example a neighbor has an old 72 ford pickup for $1K. A truck of this vintage has no computers to fail and is cheap and easy to fix, there are virtually no laws restricting re powering such an old truck so any motor you like can be stuffed in there. It's pre emissions and wont be required to undergo DEQ testing. I had considered doing this exact thing before I bought my F350 V10.

The size and weight matters on the trailer but you also have to figure in the frontal area. If it was a regular flat trailer it would pull better, but seeing as you have that large box and everyone knows how aerodynamic the front of it is, theres not much that you can do. Just live with it for a while and save your pennies for a truck that you won't outgrow, because I'm pretty sure that your not done buying toys. More toys=bigger trailer
Bigger trailer=bigger truck ( just get that F350 Diesel that you know you want )

It is a 4X4 with 30X9.5 15's for tires, bigger then stock which hurts power output some. I bought the trailer new for $2470, not bad for a 14 foot enclosed trailer. Well, better start saving for a new truck! I think I will get a chip and a intake system just to help for now.
