I have had my 2000 Big Bear for about 3 months. This thing is great, but . . . when I shift into 5th gear, I hear a whining sound (assuming it is in the transmission since it only happens in 5th). Anyone got any thoughts on this?

It does it at all speeds when in 5th, of course it gets louder with more speed. It doesn't do it at all in other gears.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I also have a 2000 BigBear, and noticed the whining in 5th. It also whines a little in 4th, but to a lesser degree. I asked my dealer about it, and the service manager told me it was because of the straight cut gears in the differential as opposed to helical cut gears, as in an automotive diff. The purpose of the straight cut is to aid durability. The reason it whines more in the higher gears is due to the load placed on the gears.
In short, I was told it was normal and not to worry about it. Hope this helps.

Thanks for explanation! I really didn't think anything was wrong, but wanted to make sure before the warranty was up.
