Default Engine question

Hey guys,

I have an '87 230S that has been sitting for about 15 years.

The engine was put away with no oil in it. I can move the kick starter through the entire stroke by hand, so nothing has siezed up or anything.

Besides putting fresh oil and filter in it, is there anything else I should do to avoid damaging the engine before I fire it up?

Thanks

Make sure the airbox is clean as well. I bought mine off a guy who hadn't started it in 3 years and sure enough a mouse had used the airbox for storage and shredded the foam air filter.

In addition to checking the airbox, I would probably clean the intake including the carb/float bowl. Make sure the petcock is allowing good fuel flow, and throw in a new spark plug.

And while the spark plug is out, squirt a couple of squirts of oil in the cylinder, spin over a couple of times and replace plug.

Take a good look at the exhaust too. Could be all kinds of critters using that as a nest over the years.

Default Thanks guys

Thank you for all of the responses!

The machine was last run at the Tip Up Town event in Houghton Lake, MI in 1996. Just today I finished hauling all of the dismantled parts to my basement, set up a make-shift work area, and I will start going to town.

I have many more questions - I had the frame sandblasted and painted about 10 years ago, and then did the same to the front A arms about 5 years ago. New bearings were installed in the A's, but not put back on the frame yet. That is about it.

I was thinking about putting the front arms/shocks/tires back on the frame, putting a milk crate under it, and then put the engine back in. Does this sequence make sense or do you guys recommend a different order to things?

Since it was never used much, can I use old throttle/brake cables or should I get new ones? They appear in good shape. I am planning on adding a twist grip throttle.

Thanks again!!

i hope you don't plan on ramping. twist throttle on a 230 ramping = pain and punishment. i learned that the hard way. every time i landed i would open the throttle wide open and damn near crash.
