Unless you find someone who sells a 38 it wouldnt be worth the effort of modifying something. The difference in going up one tooth in the front or down 2 in the back is exremely small.

i didn't know 660 had a 40 tooth rear? my 700 came 14/38 stock. i put a 36 on the rear. if they make smaller for the 700, they have to make smaller for the 660. try Renthal.

I tried every brand that you can think of, and then some and no one makes anything smaller than a 40 tooth sprocket for the rear.

Is the Sprocket hub interchangeable on the two of these? If so ebay a hub.

I took a look I didnt see any smaller than 40 either. If you go to DennisKirk.com and look up any part it will have a link to other machines that part will also fit, its usefull for this sort of thing. The sprokets I looked up for a 660 dont specify that they will fit a 700. They will fit a Warrior but only 89 and up. They sell a 38 for a 87-88 Warrior but it wont fit a newer Warrior or a Raptor. Evidently Yamaha changes thier hub patern sometimes.
