Default Will only start and run in full choke....

I own a 97 Kodiak 400, and I left the fuel **** open for about 3 months with out using the ATV. I cleaned out the tank and all the lines, but not the carb. After all this the ATV will only start in full choke. It will also run like normal in full choke but as soon as I push it to normal run position it turns right off and seems to flood the engine cause if have to push the throttle halfway to full throttle to get the ATV to start back up. I did purchase a carb rebuild kit and plan on rebuilidng the carb soon. Is There anything else I can check while doing the Carb rebuild?

Thanks for your help.

Some part of your carb is clogged with the crud that forms in old gas. Take off the tank and unscrew the fuel line to drain the tank(if you drain it through the fitting it will clog with chunks of bad gas). Swish some fresh gas around in the tank and drain it again. Take the carb off and take it apart. Clean and rebuild the carb, be sure to spray out every hole and passage with carb cleaner(the little straw fits in most passages). Make sure to put in the new needle on the float AND the new seat, they have to be completely clean to seal properly. Replace your fuel filter if your bike has one, if not, put an inline filter between the carb and fuel tank. That should do it.

Thanks for the reply I just need to find some time to take off the carb and do a rebuild. I did order a rebuild kit an it arrived a week ago. Do you know how many turns the idle screw should be turned out from closed?

Your pilot jet and its circuit is clogged.. The carb rebuild kit should cure everything... Main thing to do is remove all the main jet and its holder, the pilot jet and the needle.. spray carb cleaner and compressed air (if you have it available) and reassemble with all the new parts... Id set the fuel screw at 2 to 2 1/2 turns out..

And get a fuel filter..

If its not torn apart already why not buy a can of Sea Foam (at least thats what we have here) or a concentrated Gum Out . Give it a liberal shot and run it awhile see if it comes out of it before the tear down. Maybe run it and let it set over night also. Just a thought and its easier.
