Default Help With old timberwolf

I just bought this Yamaha timber-wolf 250 for $600. Isn't in to bad of shape, the problem is the only ways i can get it to start is kicking it into gear while being pushed or jumping the starter with cables. The push button does nothing. Ive tried replacing the battery, the silinoid. still nothing. Any ideas??

-not a pull start ethier
- Not sure on the year. guy said its a 95 or 98.

i believe the 10th digit on the VIN will tell you the year. have you ran continuity checks on the wiring to/from the starter switch, ignition switch, battery & inline fuse, and solenoid to see where the voltage is dropping and not making it through? another thing to do is to go ahead and pull the starter and test it on the ground to see if it spins(just like you test a car's starter). but as stated, before you pull the starter, check for voltage to/from the starter to see if it is getting any voltage to crank it. we may be looking at a wiring issue or a faulty starter. so let's test and get the easy/cheap stuff out of the way first.

Is power getting to the push to start button from the key?
Does it then get to the small wire for the starter solinoid from the push to start button?
If you hook power to solinoid small wire it should clickthe solinoid shut (if it is working) and this should cause your starter to crank over the engine, assuming suficient battery power is getting to the soliniod. The starter must be fine if you can jump it with battery cables.

check all those things and you should find your problem its probably just a broken wire but could be a bad switch
