Default Yamaha Breeze starter issue

I just picked up a Yamaha breeze (not sure of the year, early 90's I think) and it will not start
the starter motor turns...it does engage the flywheel gear but will not turn over the motor.
Ive read that the starter clutch tends to go on these.
I got this rig in this shape, so I have no way of knowing if it has other issues besides needing a new starter clutch...I wish there was another way to try and start it.
I have the clutch case off. I was going to take off the flywheel...but I am kinda stuck because I cant figure out a way to keep the motor from turning over when I try to remove the 22mm nut.

Then I got to think, could I use my drill on that nut to turn the motor over fast enough to see if the engine will run? I obviously cant drive it without the clutch cover since it supports the idler gear shaft...but I would at least like to hear the motor fire before buying parts for it.

So, can I safely try to start the motor that way? And any ideas on how to take the 22mm nut off to get to the starter clutch???
