Default 2001 Kodiak lost spark... new winch cause it?

I have a 2001 Kodiak that came into my shop that lost spark. I went through the service manual and got down to the point where it says "Replace CDI" While I guess that would be the route I would go I hate throwing a $300 part at it to see if it truly is the cause of failure. The only info I have to go on is that this was the second time he used the new winch (plow.) The quad actually died while he was lifting the plow with the winch. I saw a post somewhere that a user had cdi's blowing due to a winch. I have never heard of this before. Is it a possibility and how would the winch cause it. It is a Kolpin winch, never heard of that either

Followed the instructions that were provided (most of them), but I don't know which one of the stator wires to ground out. When I hook up the ignition coil to the positive on the battery I am getting a spark, which normally I would think is a short somewhere but was told this would be normal when hooking it up.

Just reread my post. I do not mean I am getting spark at the plug. I am getting an arc when I connect the jumper lead on the positive post from the coil lead

I ended up finding an inexpensive cdi and vr, plugged them in and she fired right up. I couldn't get the cdi bypass trick to work, so I just took a chance and it worked. Thanks for the help
