GY200fan,

I am also in the Atlanta area, and I just bought a 17 tooth front sprocket off EBAY but haven't recieved it yet. If you are going to swap to aq 40 tooth rear, I may be interested in buying your 46.

Hey Sixgun71,

Please send me an e-mail to: briankirkady@yahoo.com . I will probably just save my 46 tooth sprocket just in case I want to ride in conditions that are more suited for good torque instead of top speed. The good thing is, you are a LOCAL GY200 rider so that makes you kinda valuable considering that there doesn't seem to be very many of us around here.

In addition to changing your front sprocket, what other mods have you done to your GY200? Do you ride on the street or offroad?

Take care,

GY200Fan

I have a 42 on the back of mine and i can get to about 70mph now, i did also add a scorpion pipe, which made a nice increase in power as well. I weigh about 175 pounds so mine may do a little faster than yours considering your about a hundred pounds heavier. I do have plenty of torque still with the 42. I also considered going up a tooth in the front, but when i looked at it, it appeared to me like there wasn't going to be enough room, by the time you put the chain on. The 42 has turned out to be the perfect one for me though, I now get the speed I wanted and still can take it off road some, and I can use others gears than just fifth all the time! I am really pleased with it now, it's a lot of fun to ride.

Well, I got my 17 tooth front sprocket today. I dont know if I will put it on or not, but I only paid $10.00 for it. I may go with a 42 tooth rear. What is 1st gear like with the 42? I can walk faster than 1st gear idle speed with the stock 56.

first gear is still pretty torquey, if you gas it pretty hard and pop the clutch a little, it will pop the wheel up. But it is far more usable than it was when I first bought the bike, it was completely worthless with the factory sprocket on it. The 42 seems to be a pretty nice fit for the bike, like I say, I am just not sure if the larger front will fit or not, it's worth a try, as the front is very easy to change. I did pull mine off and measured for another and just felt like it was going to be to close to work.

Hope all this is some help to ya.

My local bike shop ordered it for me. I think it is a 72 or 73 Honda CB bolt pattern. Somehow he found out that the bolt pattern was the same, i think 4.25" holes apart. Have your local bike shop check into those particular sprockets as far as bolt patterns and they can order you one. As far as changing it out, it wasn't too bad. Just have to take your back tire off and then take your back brake assembly apart and you will need to shorten your chain. I think I took about 5 links out, be careful there and don't take too much out or you will be buying a new chain as well.

Hey Sixgun71,

That new 17 tooth front sprocket should fit fine on your GY200. I just saw that my GY200 came with a 17 tooth stock sprocket, so obviously you're good to go. It doesn't look like I'll be able to upgrade to an 18 tooth myself though because its just too tight of space in there. 17 is probably as good as it gets.

So...I would suggest that you go ahead and get that rear sprocket with about 42 teeth or so and then change out both of your new sprockets at the same time. This way you won't need to get a new chain because it should still fit once you take out a few links. I'm about to order my sprocket from http://www.sprocketspecialists.com myself and I'll let you know how it works out.

Talk to ya later,

GY200 Fan

Hello,
I read the whole forum and it seems you are a good person to ask a question. I'm in the market for a bike like the gy200 after realizing that I really wanted to buy a KLR, XRL or DRE but because of cost and the amount of time I will be able to use the bike, the gy200 caught my eye on ebay, mostly because of looks and low low cost. I have a friend who is way into bikes but he is a big Honda guy and just laughs at me when I suggested the gy200 to him today. Questions I have for you- 1. reliability of the gy200, 2. overall cost to getting one going, i.e. cost to buy, must do upgrades, etc. I will ride sometime on light trails, but will also take it to work on a road where I need to go about 45 mph, I weigh about 210 lbs., 3. your recommendation of the gy200 compared to a used bike in its price range. That's all for now any answers you have time for will help in a big way. Take care, g

Hey Glove,

I'll take the first crack at answering your questions because I was in the same boat as you a while ago...

1) Reliability--- The GY200 is a Chinese make. They seem to hold up okay though. One problem you will surely run into is with replacement parts. Many of GY200 dealers are direct importers from China and don't speak English very well. Before you buy a GY200, you will need to be sure that you have GOOD contacts for things like a spark plug, air filter, and any other normal wear & tear parts you will need in the future.

2) Cost--- You have already seen the GY200s on Ebay so you already know that they will be around $1000 with shipping. If you only want to go about 45 mph then the stock sprocket will be okay. However, you will probably want a sprocket upgrade for more top speed on streets, which will cost you about $50. The stock sprocket is PERFECT for offroad though! You may also want a tail pipe upgrade eventually because the stock tail pipe restricts top speed. Tail pips cost $30-$100 plus you will need somebody to put it on. All in all, the GY200 is a SUPER DEAL for the money!

3) Compared to used bikes--- I had the same dilemma about whether to buy a used Kawasaki instead if a new GY200...In the end, I decided that is always better to buy something new! Afterall, YOU can control the maintenance of your bike from the beginning. YOU get to make sure that the break-in is done properly in the beginning. Your GY200 will be your baby from the start...If you buy some used bike then it will be your adopted baby and you won't know how well it was taken care of in the past.

I hope this information is of some use to you...
