I would also track down fuel first from the tank to the fuel bowl. Then I would open the fuel bowl vent screw and see if fuel comes out. If it does the fuel bowl is full and the float is working.
Then I would check the choke and see if any different position helps it run. If it starts and dies right afterwards it is usually not getting gas. Make sure the fuel tank valve is open.

IOT save a bunch of time, find a nylon drift or a 12 inch length of 1/2in OD PVC pipe and give the carb a series of light taps on each side with a rubber mallet. Its worked for me before. It crude, I know, but it works IMO.
