Default valve adjustment ??

I`m sorting out a second hand chinese 110cc horizontal air cooled atv and had a go at setting the valve clearances but I am not sure I did it right.

I had the spark plug out to see the piston top and the 2 inspection covers off the side of the engine to turn and view the markings.

I did have the piston at TDC by looking at it through the spark plug hole AND noticing a different mark through the inspection hole-then I did the valve clearances.Does it matter which way I turned the crankshaft?clockwise or counterclockwise?

But how do I know that this position is Top Dead center for the compression stroke? I may have set it up 180 degrees out.Is there not another TDC on a 4 stroke? Help! I dont want to start puting this atv all back together only to have to redo this later.

Hope someone can help.
