First lets stop the stator from smoking. Unplug the voltage regulator and lay it aside. Now turn on the ignition switch and see if the stator is no longer drawing current (I bet it is not). The quad will start and run without a voltage regulator. You'll just be running off the battery for a while.

At this point it is not clear to me whether your start button is working or not. Does the quad starter turn now? Does the quad start up?

Also, what is the history of this quad? Has the wiring been hacked at all? Why are you having to add a start button? I'm just gathering information for the next step . After the quad starter cranks and the quad starts up we will switch over to troubleshooting and fixing the battery charge system...
