Have you sprayed carb cleaner around the carb manifold area with it running? if it had a leak it would die or increase rpm..

That would be the electric choke.. without it, it would be very hard to start..

Id say the choke isnt working.. Have you ever kept it running long enough to warm the engine up at all? did it run any better warm?

It is possible, but unusual, for the electric choke (also called a bystarter valve) to cause a lean mixture. Normally electric chokes fail with the choke in the enrichen (cold friendly) setting. Thus the normal sequence for a failed choke is that the quad starts up fine but runs more and more erratic as it warms up.

The way these things work is that an electrically powered heater, which is engaged only after the engine is running, heats up a wax pellet in the choke that expands and pushes on a plunger that closes off an extra fuel passage that enrichens the fuel air mixture.

Note how this is different from the manual choke plate scenario that changes the fuel air ratio by starving the carburetor from getting air. Either way works: You decrease the air or increase the fuel when cold.

If you lose power to the electric choke it will stay in the "enrichen" (cold) setting. If the expanding pellet fails it will most likely fail to the "small" setting rather than stay in the "expanded" setting. When balloons fail they get small. They don't stay big.

One possibility is that the linkage jams and stays jammed when cold with the extra fuel passage pinched off. That would make the quad run lean. I really doubt that as a likely scenario.

There is a gasket between the electric choke and carburetor housing. If this is missing, or if the whole electric choke assembly is loose (a couple screws) then this causes problems. It's worth checking. My neighbor's quad had a loose electric choke assembly. It was a major problem, but I don't remember (amongst all his other problems over a couple years) whether he was running rich or lean. Again, it is worth checking.
