Default How badly have I screwed myself over?

Changing the oil on a 110 BMX motor. Opened the wrong bolt (they really should be clearly marked) And a spring, and a rod with holes in it fell out. When I put it back in, I put the spring in first, then the rod... Ima guess that's the wrong way because when I fired it back up and went a little ways. The gearbox started grinding and squeeking and making horible noises. Pushed it back to the shed and pulled the bolt again, rod fell out, but the spring is stuck inside.
So how badly have I screwed my motor up? And is it fixable?

These people had the same problem.

I saw your PM. I've been really busy and have gotten behind a bit on my posts. I decided to answer here so that it may spur others to help out where I cannot.

I know a lot about electronics, and there is so much similarity between quad electrical systems that I can often muddle through these types of problems even if I've neer seen a particular model before.

Mechanical stuff is different. I've never owned or worked on a 110cc machine, so I'm like a fish out of water here...

110cc machines are copies of the old Honda E22 engine, and you can still get service manuals for them. Clymer makes one. It's for the old Honda engine, but most of the info applies to chinese knockoffs as well.

The thing you removed is the cam chain tensioner. You are about the 2 million'th person to do that so don't feel bad. I've never seen a post here the spring got lost, so your somewhat of a pioneer in this regard . I don't know, but I wondering if the cam tensioner stuff can't also be accessed through the engine side covers? If so, you could take a look through the side cover(s). No (or just a little) oil comes out when you pull out the wrong plug, so it seems that all this stuff should be accessable as being "outside" the main engine inards. But again I don't know. I'm hoping someone else does and will chime in...

the problem is you installed the spring first, you now have that spring tearing up the guts of the motor. second problem is you ran the motor with the chain tentionor out of the motor. hopefully it didnt jump time. your going to need to open the motor up and remove the spring or whats left of it, and look and see if it did any damage while in there.

Ok, today I opened the bolt cover, pulled the rod out, put a bent coathanger in the hole and fished out the spring. Thing is... it's really bent up.
So I bent it back to a spring shape... ish. Anyway, my question is, can I use the now re-bent spring? If not, who can sell me a new spring? Also, which way does the rod go in? rubber end first or last?
Have some pictures. (from my crap phone)

I can't find the edit post button, so here's another reply. (ugh)
Anyway, I bent the spring to more springey shape and put it together and tried it. Seems to work just fine. I'll be saving up for a new spring though, make me sleep better.
