Don't know if you've taken a starter apart before, but it's a lot easier than most people think. From the sounds of what you've described, that's where I'd be looking.

Your problem sounds like a slipping starter clutch (not part of the starter motor). I'll post more tonight when I get home from work.

Glad you saw this Lynn. Got no experience with this model and kinda grasping at straws.

The starter motor connects and disconnects from the crankshaft via a starter clutch. The starter motor is always engaged with a much larger gear that attaches to the starter clutch. The other side of the starter clutch drives the crankshaft.

This clutch is just a one way "sprag clutch" (google that term and look at the wikipedia writeup for some good info). When the starter motor tries to spin faster than the engine crankshaft the clutch locks up and the starter turns the engine (at about 600 RPM). When the engine starts the engine RPM climbs to about 1700 RPM at idle. Since this is faster than the starter motor is trying to turn the engine the clutch overruns (freewheels) disconnecting the engine from the starter. All the while the engine is running, the starter clutch remains in the freewheel mode - keeping the starter disconnected from the engine.

So it looks like your starter clutch is slipping and needs to be replaced. But before you do that make sure you haven't accidently installed the battery backwards. If you do that the starter will still engage with the start circuitry but it will spin backwards - putting the starter clutch into freewheel mode.

There are numerous free full blown service manuals available for the GY6 engine. Have you downloaded any of these yet? One or more of them has the procedure you need for changing the starter clutch. Parts for GY6 engines are available all over the place.
