Default Timing chain

My son rolled his quad and snaped the timing chain, I took it apart but i'm not sure how to set up the new chain. Engine model (1p47fmf) The gear on the head has a dot on it but I don't see what to line that dot up with.
Also I have another quad (tzh152fmh) I got for a project to fix but was wondering if the chain and head sprocket would be the same so that I could use those instead of ordering new one's. Just wondering before I rip that moter apart only to find that they don't work.
Thanks in advance for any sugestions.

a lot of these cheap heads dont have timing marks..
set your motor to top dead center and then imagine a line going straight up the cylinder and line your cam up with that.. it will be around 10:00..

something like this

that mark on mine is one I made with a sharpie, and I think its low, but the cam is right here

Take a pic of the timing gear. It may line up flush with the case.

Thanks for all your help. I replaced the chain and sprocket with the one from the other engine that I had and the motor seems fine. For some reason I can't get the quad to go into neutral but I haven't messed with it to much. Question, what type of oil should I use for this engine. All I had was 5w20. I put that in but I haven't driven the quad yet. Thanks again

Those three bolts on the (timing) sprocket in the pic do they self centre / self allign?
In other words can one install / put the sprocket on incorrectly?
Is there a timing mark on the cam shaft, on the sprocket,
on the cylinder head? (and where)

yes the timing sprocket only goes on one way. What I did is like up the little dot on the sprocket with the notch on the housing. The notch was more or less where high_boost had his sharpie mark. I was a bit surprised but it worked .

If one looks at high boost pic - is that the compression stroke?

if you turn the flywheel crank to the top dead center the markings would be directly oppesite correct ?? and is that the exhaust stroke??

And should one only set the valve clearance on the exhaust stroke?

in the pic above I set the slash next to the T on the flywheel straight up in the little viewing window and it is where I set my valve lash.. honestly I dont know which stroke it is on

my quad runs like a raped ape now so I assume it is correct

I use 10-30 or 10-40 motorcycle oil, it takes 1 qt.. they say that you should not ever put normal auto oil in there because it will mess up the clutch, but I dont know anything about that.. motorcycle oil isnt that much more so I figured better safe than sorry

as far as the shifting goes you may just need to adjust the clutch.. I had mine too tight before and it didnt want to shift

Given my thump test I set the valve clearance / gap on:
  1. High boost marking ( and directly opposite my marking I believe = the exhaust stroke)
  2. Quad ran good
PS EXCEPT I snapped the one head cylinder Stud as i was reaching 15 FT pounds - but hey its still running
