please leave the battery leads connected when the quad is running. there's some juice flowing and it needs to find a way to complete the circuit. so, you tested the battery while the quad was at idle and got 12.6 volts. did you rev it up a little bit to see if the voltage went up? is it a maintenance free battery? can you see the water/acid levels through the side of the battery? we're trying to rule out a bad/dry/dying cell in your battery. 14.6 volts sounds like your stator is doing fine.

the 12.6 i measured was when the engine was reved up. Yes it is a maintenance free battery and i can see the acid levels which are all ok. The battery is new

ok, we'll have to follow Lynn's advice on the stator testing.

How many wires on your regulator connector , and what are the colors?

We'll go from there, but I have to say I'm disappearing for the next ten days. I'm going to be travelling and working hard. I will be back after ten days.

hi just an update. did more work last night.

connected the battery and while i was doing this the earth crimp fell of so i replaced this. i then noticed that my brake switch was stuck on so i then corrected this.

i then started the quad and measured the voltage at idle which was 13 volts

as i increased the revs the voltage went up to around 13.8 volts.

i then went for a drive and stopped the quad and the battery was ok.

this may have been my problem

what do you think???

conservatively, sounds like you got it, BUT, watch it as you ride it the next few days. test it periodically and keep notes about it and report back any bad symptoms it may be producing. we do appreciate your thoroughness on the check out!
