Default 2006 Kodiak Problems

So I recently acquired my step fathers 2006 Kodiak 450 he let a sit too long and it's top speed went from 55-60 to 20-25mph he had someone replace the carb it came back and for a week ran like it use to then wouldn't start, I'm pretty hand with small motor but haven't worked on a 4 wheeler yet. Any suggestions on where I should start would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Check the screen in the fuel petcock and make sure enough is getting to the carb.
Does it run smooth or is it sputtering and missing?
I guess the air filter was replaced?
